Small Acts of Kindness

When we’re absorbed in our work, sometimes we’re so focused on our own journey that we forget about the importance of helping others.

As I think about what I’m proud of over the course of my career, there are the major achievements such as launching new features and capabilities but I’m also pleasantly surprised by how small acts of kindness have actually been tremendously gratifying.

What I’m talking about here are the small acts like finding a few extra minutes of your time to help a stranger along or choosing to be kind to those around you.

Even small gestures can make a difference

“The smallest deed is better than the greatest intention.” ― John Burroughs

As I look back, I’ve never regretted any of the coffee chats that I’ve made time for or the additional conversations with interview candidates even if the opportunity didn’t pan out. Many of these small touches have blossomed into close acquaintances and friendships.

Be proactive and listen to the cues

I also found it important to pay attention and proactively look for opportunities to offer a helping hand, even when not asked. In many cases, people may not ask directly for help - either they don’t want to impose or they just don’t even know what to ask for.

Always be kind

We can all contribute to a more positive environment regardless of our role or title in an organization. Despite the negative situations that may arise, it’s up to each of us to be kind to those around us and to break the chain of negativity.

Change the game

Instead of the game that involves being the center of attention and personal glory, I’m looking to change the game to one where the goal is to help the most people even if we only have time for some small acts of kindness.
